Research publishing : where to publish

Factors to consider when choosing a journal title

Researchers choose to publish their research findings for various reasons: to validate their research, to increase the researcher’s credibility, to meet the requirements of recruitment, promotions, or grant applications, to name just a few. For those early career researchers, the most intractable question is: How to select a suitable journal for your paper?

► Select peer-reviewed journals

  • Scholarly peer review (also known as refereeing) is the process of subjecting an author's scholarly work, research output, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field, before a paper describing this work is published in a journal.
  • Peer review is medium-independent, as relevant to online journals as to print journals.

► Find discipline relevant journals reaching the desired target audience

  • Use reliable and accurate resources to identify and select the most adequate and trusted journals covering your research area for potential publication.
  • Following the publisher's instructions to authors on the type of material they accept will increase the likelihood that your manuscript will be accepted.
Journal Impact

► Check journal impact, often determined through use of metrics

  • Publishing in high impact journals can increase your citation count - more people are likely to read and cite articles published in these journals.
  • Be realistic with where you submit your manuscript - aim high but try to avoid rejection.
  • Go to research impact & citation metrics guide to know all about journal ranks and citation metrics tools.
  • Compare journals using Scopus Journal Analyzer

Tools for Journal Selection
There are a number of tools available to help researchers choose a suitable journal. The types of tools available vary, some help with initial shortlisting while others provide data points you would need to consider your choice of journal such as quality of peer-review process, acceptance rates etc.

Check out these tools to get suggestions on journals to submit your article. Most of them require a combination of information related to the journal article in order to suggest a suitable journal. Some of the usual information required include title of paper, abstract, keywords, subject area etc.
