Course reserves

What are course reserves?

  • Faculty may place on reserve print or electronic documents (books, textbooks, periodical articles, presentations, etc.) to be used by students registered in their course.
  • Maximum number of items per course is 30.
  • Print reserve materials are maintained on the circulation desk while electronic materials can be accessed online through the Library catalog.
  • In general, materials on reserve are not to be checked out. If instructed by the professor, they can be borrowed for two hours only during the day or overnight.

How to place items on reserve?

  • Fill in this Online Form for books available in the library
  • Email soft copies or/and send hard copies of materials to the appropriate library’s circulation desk.
  • Processing requires 3-4 days on average once the request and photocopies are submitted
  • Full information can be found on the Course Reserve policy page.

How to view materials put on reserve?

  • Access your library account using your UOB ID to search for reserved materials by instructor or course code or click here.

Incorporating electronic resources links in Moodle

Most licensing agreements with library database providers permit linking to full-text articles and e-books from your course page on Moodle.

What is a persistent URL or a DOI?

To be effective the link must be a persistent URL or a DOI.

  • Persistent URLs (also called stable URLs, permalinks, persistent links, or durable links) are Internet addresses that remain constant. Because our subscription databases are accessible on and off campus, links that use persistent URLs enable access while protecting copyrighted articles.
  • DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. A DOI is a unique persistent identifier for a published digital object, such as an article or a study. A DOI also links to an article or study. Here is an example of a citation for a study with a DOI: Saegert, S. (2008). Poverty and psychology: From global perspective to local practice. Global Public Health, 3(1), 109-111. doi:10.1080/17441690701664046

How to add UOB Proxy prefix?

  • For a full-text link to work from off-campus locations, the UOB University proxy server address MUST be prefixed to the persistent URL or DOI. Our proxy server address is: http://ezsecureaccess.balamand.edu.lb/login?url=
  • In many of our databases each persistent URL already includes the proxy prefix.  If it doesn't the prefix can easily be added. You simply paste the proxy server address to the beginning of the persistent URL or DOI. For example, the link you should insert in your syllabus or Moodle course page is:
    http://ezsecureaccess.balamand.edu.lb/login?url=https://doi.org/10.1080/17441690701664046
